My son had a traumatic birth. He had heart surgery when he was one day old, and for a while was subject to a cocktail of medication. It was very stressful for me, especially as I was working from home and struggling with postpartum depression.
I thought I would share a few things that helped me manage the medication aspect of things (juggling work, doctor’s appointments, and his older sister was another thing).
(This post is in partnership with searchrx.com, but all opinions are my own.)
Keeping track of dosage
When Jac was on Synthroid, his dosage was alternating, which meant one day it was one pill, and another day it was one and a half. I was always stressing out about giving him the right dose.
I did two things that helped keep me on track: one, I kept a piece of paper in the bathroom, and I would write the dosage I gave him every day. But sometimes I forgot to write it down, which is terrible. So the other thing I did was use one of these pill boxes. I would put the correct dosage in the appropriate day, and it really helped me remember.
When Jac was on Captopril, he had to take it every eight hours, which was terrible, because I nearly always ended up waking up in the middle of the night to give it to him. Even during the day, though, I was not always going to remember, so I had permanent alarms set in my phone to remind me to give it to him.
Jac had to constantly get his blood drawn to check his thyroid levels to see if they needed to be adjusted. It’s a very sensitive hormone, and the wrong amount could cause some damage. The hospital would call me with results, but I could also go online to my hospital’s Mychart page to check the lab results and see the medication dosage, if I was ever unsure.
The nice thing about Mychart is that you can also contact the doctors through email through the software. For moms who can’t do phone calls with screaming children, this is awesome.
If you want to see if your hospital has this feature, google the name of your hospital with Mychart.
