“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
I’m crazy about the imagery here. The God who made the heavens dances over me!
“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
We’ll never show that kind of love. It’s beyond understanding. And reserved for us.
“He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.” Psalm 18:19
I delight Him. Me! He really likes me.
“You will call and I will answer you; you will long for the creature your hands have made.” Job 14:15
Oh, the emotion here! God LONGS for me!
“Since you are precious and honored in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life.” Is.43:4
I don’t really understand this except to see the huge inherent value God places upon me.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. Is.49:15-16
The metaphor here is poignant. I’m a mom; I know how strong that bond is.
“In all their distress he too was distressed, and the angel of his presence saved them. In his love and mercy he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.” Is. 63:9
The empathy and compassion here is vivid. He CARES about me.
“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” Jer. 31:3
I think this emphasizes that even when our own heart has strayed from God, his tender mercies will draw us back.
“Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.” Hosea 2:14
Very similar to the previous passage, with a focus on God’s gentle kindness and love.
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Rom. 8:32
Another reminder if we forget our own value – this is how much God loves us. How much we are worth to Him.
God’s love is eternal, and sometimes we need vivid imagery just to help our imagination conjure up something that is even close to the extremity of this kind of love. Because we really just can’t get it.
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” 1 John 3:1a
This is how He feels about me. He calls me his daughter, his dearly beloved one.
“‘Is not Ephraim my dear son, the child in whom I delight? Though I often speak against him, I still remember him. Therefore my heart yearns for him; I have great compassion for him,’ declares the Lord.” Jer. 31:20
There’s that language again, just like in Job. God yearns for me.
“As the Father has loved Me so He has loved you.” John 17:23
The same kind of love God has for Jesus He has for us! I can’t even imagine this intensity.
This is a good reminder of the manner in with God watches over us. He loves us with the devotion of a mother, the intensity of a lover, and the faithfulness of a shepherd.
“Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.” Eph. 5:25-28
This is the most beautiful picture of genuine, sacrificial love that you will find. God loves us so much that he went to the extreme to ensure that every little thing that threatens to steal from us and destroy us could have no part in us. In context, God is urging husbands to love their wives this same way, as it is the ultimate example of pure love.
For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Cor. 5:21
God loved us so much that he put all of our sin upon his beloved Son.
For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. Eph. 5:29
Christ nourishes and cherishes us!
