The link between coffee and anxiety

I recently shared a post on social media about my anxiety relief that I will also share here. The interesting thing is that when I mentioned coffee and anxiety, several people said that cutting out coffee made a huge difference for them. I read an article that mentioned that coffee can worsen anxiety, which encouraged me to give eliminating it a try.

Here’s my post:

Some of you who follow my blog know that I have struggled on and off with anxiety and depression for a while. I had experienced a victory with anxiety a few years back, but recently it reared its ugly head again.

The thing about it is when it appears in my life, unlike depression, I don’t often recognize it for what it is, and I usually think it’s a product of me having too much going on. People always assure me how NORMAL it is to be experiencing stress since I’m a special needs mom who works at home, is fighting cancer, etc.

No matter how justified it is, though, the pain it causes me and my family is enough to leave me scrambling for solutions. Several weeks ago, it got really bad, what my husband’s calls “high anxiety”, culminating in a meltdown that had me canceling playing keyboard for a women’s Bible study at the last minute.

I stayed home that night, seeking God for answers. It was then that I realized that the decaf coffee I’d been drinking might have been responsible for me being on edge all the time, and I cut it out completely.

About a week later my new medication kicked in, and it was life-changing. I’ve been completely anxiety-free for over two weeks. I’m so much happier. I’m enjoying my kids, not yelling at them. Small things like a messy house or needing to be somewhere at a certain time don’t drive me insane.

If this is you and you struggle with anxiety or depression and it massively affects your loved ones, there’s hope! Pray, seek God, see a doctor if necessary. Breakthrough can be yours. Don’t give up.

Also, try black tea in the morning!
